Intern - Robotics
What's the role?
Hilti has recently launched a semi-autonomous mobile drilling robot, the Jaibot. But many challenges remain. During this internship, you will investigate, test and develop on state-of-the-art algorithms functional to mobile manipulator autonomy. It is a challenging opportunity to get both theoretical insights into the algorithmic aspects as well as to do hands on implementation, practical work on physical robot prototypes.
Start date is flexible to the student's availability (ideally July /August 2021), duration of at least 6 months
Who is Hilti?
If you’re new to the industry, you might not have heard of us. We provide leading-edge tools, technologies, software and services for the global construction sector. We have a proud heritage, built over 75 years, and a worldwide reputation for pioneering products and exceptional service.
With 30,000 people in more than 120 countries, which we’re looking to expand, we’re a great place for you to show us your worth, step up to new challenges and grow your career.
What does the role involve?
As an intern in our Robotics & Visual Computing group, you will be part of our research and technology development team on construction robot autonomy topics. You will work closely with leading experts in the field to explore and dive into cutting edge robot autonomy algorithms.
Mobile manipulator autonomy revolves around three main topics of manipulator motion planning w/o obstacle avoidance, robot localization and mapping with focus on sensor fusion and mobile base path planning w/o obstacle avoidance. Depending on your interest, motivation and prior experiences, you will be tasked to work on either one or two of the three autonomy topics. Irrespective of the autonomy topic, the key assignment is to understand and document the algorithmic details behind the state-of-the-art methods and simulate, test and develop on them for construction application use cases on physical robot prototypes. Additionally, you will test the robustness and limitations of these algorithms and explore practical challenges and solutions especially considering real world deployment scenarios.
What do we offer?
We’ll give you the tools you need to excel in your internship, including one-to-one coaching. You’ll enjoy a rare combination of autonomy and camaraderie, as you’ll manage your own project while being part of a friendly team.
You’ll not just be another pair of hands but a fully integrated team member with lots of self-responsibility. From there, we’ll trust you to do whatever it takes to deliver outstanding results. Go the extra mile and we’ll reward you with strategic development discussions and career opportunities.
We’ll support you even before you start with us through relocation and integration support. With the international intern’s community at Hilti you’ll never be bored. Further, the snow-draped mountains, crystal-clear lakes and marvelous landscapes in the Happy Valley invite for lots of outdoor activities.
Why should you apply?
The Hilti Robotics andVisual Computing team is connected to the world’s leading research networks;and our work pushes the capabilities of real-world robotics. Therefore, we canprovide you with opportunity to not only work with state-of-the-art algorithmsbut also cutting-edge methods. Working in our team exposes you to real worldchallenges encountered on construction sites, therefore you have a chance toapply and extend your robotics skills and knowledge for making real wordimpact.
What you need is:
- Master student in computer science, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering
- Good knowledge and prior experience in programming (C++, ROS, Gazebo)
- Hardware debugging and code deployment experience on physical robot prototypes
- Experience with either motion planning or sensor fusion algorithms for manipulator and mobile robots
- Patience, drive and persistence for working on challenging problems
We take our time to get to know you. As part of your recruitment process, you’ll get to talk to your internship coach as well as your HR Manager who both can answer some of your burning questions.
Hilti is an equal opportunity employer.
